Autoworkers Strike Continues

The United Auto Workers union is preparing to announce a possible expansion of its strike against General Motors, Stellantis and maybe Ford. The union went on strike against the three automakers on September 15, the first time it ever struck all three automakers at the same time. But it struck only one assembly plant for each company at that time, having 12,700 members go on strike rather than all 145,000 who work at the three companies.

The NLRA is a federal law that grants employees the right to form or join unions; engage in protected, concerted activities to address or improve working conditions; or refrain from engaging in these activities. The NLRA applies to most private sector employers, including manufacturers, retailers, private universities, and health care facilities. The NLRA does not apply to federal, state, or local governments; employers who employ only agricultural workers; and employers subject to the Railway Labor Act (interstate railroads and airlines). Most employees in the private sector are covered under the NLRA. The law does not cover government employees, agricultural laborers, independent contractors, and supervisors (with limited exceptions).

The attorneys at Outside Legal Counsel LLP can help businesses ensure that they in compliance with the NRLA and help employees understand their rights under NRLA. Please reach out to us for a consultation.
