According to Reuters, DoorDash has agreed to acquire British food delivery rival Deliveroo for approximately $3.9 billion in cash, aiming to strengthen its presence across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The offer, representing a 29% premium over Deliveroo’s prior share price, has been approved by Deliveroo’s board but still awaits shareholder approval—Amazon, its largest investor, has yet to signal support.
Deliveroo currently operates in 10 countries, with the majority of its business concentrated in the UK and Ireland. This move follows DoorDash’s $8.1 billion acquisition of Finnish delivery company Wolt in 2022, reflecting an aggressive international expansion strategy. If finalized, the acquisition would extend DoorDash’s global footprint to over 40 markets.
As consolidation continues in the food delivery space, companies should evaluate the antitrust and integration risks that accompany cross-border M&A.
