Employers and Growing Wave of Union Organizing

As businesses rush to integrate artificial intelligence into daily operations, many are doing so without establishing clear internal rules or legal frameworks—a move that experts warn could invite a wave of lawsuits from consumers, employees, and regulators, according to Law.com. (Law.com)

Attorneys cited in the report caution that AI systems lacking proper oversight can trigger liability across multiple areas, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, intellectual property, and contract performance. For instance, AI-driven tools that inadvertently use copyrighted materials or make biased hiring or lending decisions can expose companies to class-action suits and regulatory investigations. A recent study of more than 30,000 SEC 10-K filings found that corporate disclosures referencing AI-related risks rose from 4% in 2020 to over 43% by 2024, yet most lacked specific governance or mitigation plans. The data highlights a growing awareness of AI’s potential dangers—without the corresponding compliance structures to manage them. (arxiv.org)

Legal analysts emphasize that establishing formal “AI playbooks” is now essential. These should define accountability, human oversight, data-handling protocols, and ethical review processes prior to deployment. Failing to do so, experts warn, will likely lead to costly litigation and reputational harm as regulators intensify scrutiny under emerging AI governance laws in the U.S. and abroad.
