Gucci Parent Taps New CEO

Luxury fashion house Kering has reportedly chosen Luca de Meo, the current CEO of automaker Renault, as its next chief executive, according to Le Figaro. The move marks a bold and unconventional pivot for the owner of Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Bottega Veneta, as it looks to reverse a steep decline in performance—particularly at Gucci, which has struggled to regain its momentum after a series of creative transitions and softening demand in key markets like China.

De Meo, an industry veteran known for spearheading turnarounds at SEAT and Renault, is expected to step down from Renault by mid-July. If confirmed, he will replace François-Henri Pinault, who remains chairman and whose family controls Kering through investment firm Artémis. This would be the first time an outsider has been appointed to lead the group’s day-to-day operations in decades.

Kering’s shares surged nearly 10% on the news, a sign that investors are cautiously optimistic that de Meo’s operational discipline and strategic experience could translate across industries. Renault shares, by contrast, dipped following the announcement of his potential departure.

As cross-sector CEO transitions become more common, companies are increasingly looking for leaders with a fresh perspective—especially when navigating generational shifts in consumer behavior and market volatility.
