PwC lays off 1,500 employees amid low attrition and market realignment

PwC has announced plans to lay off approximately 1,500 U.S.-based employees—about 2% of its national workforce—primarily in its audit and tax practices. According to Business Insider, the firm cited “historically low attrition” as a key driver, along with broader efforts to rebalance staffing in response to shifting market conditions.

The move follows a previous wave of 1,800 layoffs in PwC’s products and technology group in September 2024, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. While the firm plans to honor internship offers made last year, it is also pulling back on campus recruitment, according
to Financial Times. Layoffs were communicated via "time-sensitive" Microsoft Teams meetings, surprising some employees who had recently joined or were expecting promotions.

These cuts place PwC alongside other Big Four firms like Deloitte and KPMG, which have also reduced headcount amid evolving client demand (Reuters, May 2025).
