Starbucks Workers Sue Over New Dress Code

Starbucks is facing multiple lawsuits from employees in Illinois, Colorado, and California who allege that the company’s newly implemented dress code violates state labor laws by requiring workers to purchase their own uniforms without reimbursement. The complaints argue that the new policy—introduced in May 2025—unlawfully shifts business costs onto employees, according to Law.com and AP News. (Law.com; AP News)

Under the revised policy, employees must wear solid black shirts, approved black, khaki, or blue denim pants, and waterproof shoes in neutral tones. Starbucks provides two branded shirts per employee but has refused to reimburse for additional clothing or required footwear. One plaintiff, Brooke Allen, alleges she spent more than $86 out of pocket, including $60 for compliant shoes, arguing that the company’s policy amounts to an unlawful uniform mandate. (AP News)

The lawsuits cite California Labor Code §2802, Colorado wage rules, and Illinois wage payment statutes, all of which require employers to reimburse employees for necessary work expenses. Plaintiffs claim Starbucks’ failure to cover these costs benefits the company’s branding while financially burdening employees.
